Question 1: How did you get into the Industry? |
Jürgen Rabatscher: It all began back in 1997 when i was asked if i would participate in producing a pc-game called "ashes of the dark lands" which was a hobby project of some cool people (Phaeton LTD.). I had never done anything in 3D before so that was the first time. |
Question 2: What are you currently working on, if not hush hush? |
Jürgen Rabatscher: Currently I am searching for a new impression, maybe I will start with Character modelling which I think would be very interesting. |
Question 3: Which piece of your work is your favourite and why? |
Jürgen Rabatscher: "If you had wings" is it! Currently... I sent it to the "animago - award" and had loads of fun modeling it. I started modeling it months ago, not the whole scene but the plane itself, along with the project "Greenage Village" for a CD-Rom project. It was the first attempt to use polymodeling and so I had to do a bigger scene for that plane. |
Question 4: Which other 3D artists have impressed you and how? |
Jürgen Rabatscher: Neil Blevins. His artworks blow me away. He put such a great amount of impression and meaning into his pictures which unfortunately is not so common. |
Question 5: What 3D ambitions do you hold? |
Jürgen Rabatscher: Getting better of course. As I never really got into the scene but work as a webdesigner I have not really plenty of time to start new 3D projects. That's why I sometimes try to include 3D into my webdesigns or flash animations. 3D is actually my main ambition for the future, bring it to the front beside webdesign, getting a job in the branch and so on...would be great! |

If you had Wings Complete Hangar modeling with supersmall "you'll never see them" details like cans in the small electricity box on the back wall or flaps on the upper part of gas cylinder. GI was used for lighting as well as HDRI and a sunlight. Texturing was done in Photoshop. |

Nuveau Art The idea of this image emerged long time ago when I stood in front of a junk dealer and thought about the old times. I spent a lot of time on the lighting because as you can see I used the standard scanline renderer without radiosity. The scene now contains about 20 lights, several used for bounce lighting and shadow faking, most of them area lights and one IE.sun which does the exterior lighting for the scene. |

Greenage Village My primary aim of this image wasn't the illusion of the real life village from a unusual point of view but to build a nifty little, more or less toonlike, village which i can use as the navigation of a cd-rom project for a trade union (Youth-Department). The buildings are used as the navigation-points.
Building this little village wasn't easy regarding of the workstation i had (pentium 3 1 ghz 256 mb ram, tnt2) so I had to model the 17 individual buildings one after another alone to finally put them together in one huge scene. The only texture i used is the one for the street which i painted in adobe illustrator. Models done by using box modeling method. I needed one detail shot for each building so I had to put a lot of details into them. Also the trees are modeled (3 different types set up and then instanced for some hours). |

Manifold Channel This piece arised sometime around 2001 when I thought I should do some 3d stuff again . Fortunately squaresoft released its wonderful cgi movie 'final fantasy - the spirits within' which gave me the needed inspiration. |

Alien Neural Implants I think writing about how I came up with this design is unnecessary. For short, I once had a dream,... and so on. Nevertheless I had to realize it, so I began to work. I found out that there is something out there which was called 'boxmodelling', hehe... so the first thing was an alienhand! Sure thing! Mixing the hand with my dream this was the final upshot. |
