Gallery of 3D.com Profile - Stefan Matthias Schmidt

3D Status: Professional
Question 1: How did you get into the Industry?
Stefan Matthias Schmidt: My passion for 3D design started with the Amiga 4000 as it helped me to create my first ever commercial success - the legendary 'Grungelizer for Cubase VST'. I started after graduating as a professional Graphic Designer. The horrendously big file sizes for print furnished my resolution to specialise in screen design. So I changed my interests to web design and GUI's.

To produce unique GUIs I was forced to create state-of-the-art applications. I simply had to use a 3D tool to reach my goal. I started off with Infini-D and I soon reached its limitations and switched to LightWave. Besides creating 3D applications for GUIs I went through the well known process of rendering 'flying logos' as well as 'spaceship scenes'... Today, it's my personal challenge to create photo-realistic images.

Question 2: What are you currently working on, if not hush hush?
Stefan Matthias Schmidt: I am currently looking for a new challenge. Most definitely I will turn my interest to architecture as it seems to be a real challenge.
Question 3: Which piece of your work is your favourite and why?
Stefan Matthias Schmidt: Hard to say. I like the Mercury One image as it was my first big piece that I did completely in LightWave. It took about three weeks to model all the applications and lighten the synthesizer appropriately. 'Just Plugs' is a newer rendering and I love its simplicity very much. 'Spiral Staircase' is also one of my favourite works because I thought it would be much easier to model, but it wasn't! My latest work, the 'Ice Hotel', is probably my favourite. I wanted to achieve very realistic looking ice and I think I have brought home the bacon. I like how the light shines through the ice and the very subtle atmosphere in the image..
Question 4: Which other 3D artists have impressed you and how?
Stefan Matthias Schmidt: At first I think Ferenc Haraszti at Renderosity.com (aka nitro115) impressed me the most with his realism. I love the way he put all the objects into a scene and I am also an admirer of his lighting techniques. There is also Nikola Tatic at Renderosity.com (aka kolja7t). His works are just amazing I love them.
Question 5: What 3D ambitions do you hold?
Stefan Matthias Schmidt: I want to gain a more in depth knowledge of LightWave and will start to design the images I have in my mind with LightWave. A future project will be a short movie for the Short Film Festival 2003 in Hamburg, Germany. But generally my personal wish for the future is to have more courageous clients for new designs (world-wide - so come on :-)

Herculaneum

I love the mediterranean style very much and was impressed by the light and colours. I felt challenged by the aged look.

I designed a Graphic User Interface and this is what I came up with when I rendered the guitar body for it.

Spiral Staircase

I saw a similar image on the web and wanted to model an interior scene with some stairs in it. I think the atmosphere is great. I am very happy with the spot lights that shine on the image as well.

Profile Image Mercury One

The first big project that I realised in LightWave. I like synthesizers in general and as this is just a virtual one I had to design it to give it the depth I need to play it virtually :-)

Ice Hotel

I love the light that shines through the ice blocks as well as the caustics that produced the refraction index of the ice. Personally, this is my favourite work at the moment but I am looking forward to my next project.
